Cathy Booth of Exeter asks about auto-line numbering prose; this problem has just arisen at RHBNC, and I have been thinking about a possible solution: If one were to arrange for the prose to enter a \vbox, rather than the main page, one could set parallel to it a second \vbox, with line numbers at appropriate (vertical) intervals. By ensuring that \baselineskip is adequate, one should be able to ensure that the two \vbox{}en never get out of synch. That leaves the problem of paragraphs breaks. If one sets \parskip to \baselineskip, synch- ronisation remains constant, and one just has to detect an empty line. By \vsplit{}ting and \unbox{}ing, one could detect if a line appears to contain just glue (by resetting the line to its natural length: if that turns out to be zero, the line is empty), and the line counter should not be incremented) Caveat: I haven't yet tried any of this; has anyone else, and will it work ? I'd also be interested in contacting the user who prompted the question, because I am trying out a bit of spelling and grammer correction in Gaelic by computer in my spare time and would be interested in contacting anyone else putting Gaelic on computer. BSD based systems currently provided for are VaX UNIX 4.2BSD and 4.3BSD, SUN2 (but this will not work with version 3.0 or 3.1 software owing to a bug in the 68010 code used by pc---a successful fix was supplied with version 3.2), SUN3 (this does work with 3.0 and 3.1 software) and Pyramid at version 2.5 or higher in the operating system. Sequent for the Dynix OS is to be found in ./unsupported, but so far only for TeX and tangle. Integrated Solutions, Celerity and Ridge ports are known to exist, and will be added to the distribution as soon as possible. The system V port was done by Lou Salkind of NYU for the 3B2. It ought to be fairly generic. It requires the System V adaptation of BSD pc, and source code for the BSD pxp from a BSD4.3 site (this is modified by a sed script). Something fairly close to this port was recently compiled with a commercial pascal compiler on an AT running DOS, so anything is possible. If you have a System V machine and a trustworthy pascal, it is probably worth a try Since TeX is free public-domain software, just about everything that can be sent out in source form is included on the tape. There are no licensing restrictions, and only minor copyright restrictions as noted in the affected files. Purchase orders are now acceptable, but there will be an extra charge of $10.00, owing to the processing charges we incur. (Total of $150 for domestic sites, $175 for foreign sites). The normal distribution is a tar tape, blocked 20, 1600 bpi. If you need 1/4 inch streamer cartridges for the SUN, be sure to tell us. Although we have had problems previously with cartridge tapes, we can now get them out quite fast. SystemV tapes are written in cpio format, blocked 5120 bytes, ASCII headers. Current versions of standard programs in the distribution: (in the ./tex82 path) TeX 2.3 (implying the use of the new cm fonts.) Just about all standard shapes and sizes in 118, 200, 240, and 300 gf(dpi) series. The gf files for the principal LaTeX symbol fonts are in a separate list. The Euler fonts are supplied in gf format only. (If you want [euler].mf source files, you should get in touch with the American Mathematical Society, which will make these available under license.)
