UKTeX V88 #33 Friday 14 October 1988 Announcing DVItoLN03 V2.1 Greek fonts for textual use WEB for Modula-2 (MWEB) Archives (and how to get them). Re: Mail into/out of JANET -- some info (V88#232) tex Ascii table Problem with hyphens Metafont sources ditributed at TeXeter --------------------------------- Editor Peter Abbott I am pleased to report that the new system which keeps the archive at Aston ([public.clarkson]) in line with the one at Clarkson in the US is working well with a regular update flow in both directions. In the last issue a contributor included code which 1) generated over 100 error messages from one site all of which were returned to me here at Aston. 2) chopped off the issue at some sites. I was supplied with the following as the cause of the problem. From memory it was something like: > .. > QUIT > > ----- End of forwarded messages > > . > QUIT then a few lines of other stuff. Unix and unix type mailers treat lines consisting of a single period as an end of message mark and in a case like this they send the message to that point, then notice an error (because the size of the message is different? - can't remember), return the error message to sender but the mail is still in the queue. Please will contributors take note as it all looked innocent to me. I have version 2.10.12 of the Beebe diskettes, all I need now is the time to load them into the archive. Version 2.0 of PSPRINT and DVITTOVDU have been deleted as version 3.0 of the software has been available in the archive for several weeks now under [public.trevorrow.vms] [PUBLIC.MFFILES.TEX88] APL.01;1 APL.02;1 APL.03;1 APL.04;1 BARCODES.01;1 ELVISH.01;1 GREEK_DOC.01;1 GREEK_MAIL.01;1 GREEK_ROOT.01;1 GREEK_SRC.01;1 GREEK_SRC.02;1 GREEK_SRC.03;1 HEBREW.01;1 HEBREW.02;1 OCR.01;1 Total of 15 files. His articles implied that these would find their way onto the standard distribution from Stanford but (at least by March 88) Maria Code still had not got them onto her distribution. Does anyone know where/how I can get hold of these programs; we use Modula-2 extensively here and would like to (at least consider) convert- ing TEX, etc., to M2 in place of Pascal (who knows, we might also be able to get a WEAVEable version of Andy Trevorrow's DVItoVDU to improve its documentation! We read the directions in the subdirectory /unsupported/ which involved the /unsupported/sequent/README file. We overlay the files in the /unsupported/sequent directory into the corresponding directories on the TeX distribution as directed. And now the fun began. We began to setup TeX by reading the file /tex82/RREADME setting up the directories /usr/lib/tex/fonts/tfm This we later thought aught to be /usr/lib/tex/fonts The contents of /tek/cmfonts were copied to this directory. The directory /usr/lib/tex/inputs was created and the contents of /tek/tex82/TeXmacros was copied to it. We next read the WEB-to-C README file and proceded to follow the instructions. We copied the Sequent version of the TeXware directory to /tek/tex82/TeXware in order to make tangle. This we did using the Makefile in WEB-to-C. We altered the initex.ch file in the following fashion: (1) We changed lines 402 403 in initech.ch with lines 778 779 in tex.web (2) Initex.ch line 1179 contained a page throw which we removed. We think that tex.web was version 2.9, whereas our change file, initex.ch, was for version 2.0. We noticed this when we tried to tangle tex.web and initex.ch. The inconsistencies may well be the root of the problem. We then attempted to use the make file in /tek/tex82. AT this stage we had to alter crt0.c which had an error on the top of page 3 (missing semi-colon). We also had to include a #define ns3200, since the sequent line read if defined(ns3200) && defined(sequent) The Sequent crt0.c was designed for a balance machine hence ns3200 definition testing. On the Symmetry this was not defined, hence the new problem. Using the sequent Makefile we then proceded with make, finally building inititex and virtex. We then moved initex.pool to /usr/lib/tex/tex.pool. We then got into grave difficulties dumping the .fmt file as follows: initex plain '\dump' At this point we got a range error. We altered the Pascal initex.p as the formulation of the absolute value of h at line 3935 in initex.p was not in accordance with Sequent Pascal. In further monitoring with writeln statements we found that there was now no longer errors in the absolute value of h. Also we found that initex was not recognising the command '\dump' on the command line and produced the .fmt file in pdbx by using % initex plain * '\dump' i.e invoking the dump command at the tex * prompt. Using pdbx we achieved a plain.fmt file. When not using pdbx we still kept getting a range error. As we ran succcessfully under pdbx we could in no way find where the range error was occurring. When we came to use the plain.fmt file we realised it was not correct as we could in no way run tex correctly. At this point we felt we could get no further. +++Editor - We also have a Sequent system so are interested in making it available once the problems have been solved.
