UKTeX V88 #36 Friday 4 November 1988 TEX 2.93b (I think) for VMS TeXcalc DVI to Brother HL-8 driver? Use of Mr EMACS TeXnician or TeXpert? LaTeX iso style \stackrel for three lines RE: Producing document for online viewing (laTeX) Editor Peter Abbott There has been a problem with [public]000last30days.files. It has been cured and the file is now updated again at 0100 GMT each day. IF YOU HAVE ALREADY REPLIED PLEASE IGNORE THIS REQUEST (from UKTeX V88 #34 and #35) Thanks to everyone who has responded, this will be the last time this appears. I would like to ask for your help. I am hoping to improve the service offered by the digest and the archive and need some statistics. If you are reading this between October 21 and November 11 1988 please send me a message giving your name, company,town/city and country. I know that the digest is redistributed in some countries and also put up on bulletin boards. I would be grateful if you are one of the secondary readers and cannot mail me direct if you would reply to the bulletin board moderator or the site from which your copy came. Thank you. This includes an improved editor interface which supports callable EDT and TPU, TECO (for us Real Programmers) and non-DEC editors such as Emacs. And there's oodles of memory for setting halftones or PiCTeX diagrams. It's loosely based on the public-domain Stanford distribution of TeX, not the Kellerman and Smith (now only Kellerman) implementation. If in doubt, you can tell which you have simply by looking at the logical names used: Stanford's and mine uses TEX$thing, K-n-S's uses TEX_thing. I'm just brushing up (i.e., writing) the documentation and will be able to send copies of the change file (etc) out early next week. Interested parties should, as they say, contact... Adrian F. Currently it runs in InstaCalc(tm) from FormalSoft (Sandy, Utah) because that happens to be what I use, but I guess it could easily be ported into other systems. Here is the screen as it appears when popped up: +---------------------------------------------------------------------------+ |TeXcalc Typographic design calculator for TeX Enter units below | | | |Faces: Typeface:cmr10 Units:pt | | cmr Design Size: 10 pt (1pt = 1 pt) | | cmbx Scaling:\magstep 0 ( = 1 truept) | | cmsl Scale Factor: 1000 ( at current scaling) | | cmti x-Height: 4.310 truept | | cmtt Quad Width: 10.000 truept Valid Units| | cmmi Dimension Unit pt | |(10/12/17 pt) pc | | \hsize= 6.5 in 469.755 truept in | | \vsize= 9.5 in 686.565 truept bp | |---------------------------------------------------------------- cm | | Enter your dimension: 1 in 72.270 truept mm | |---------------------------------------------------------------- dd | | \parskip= 0 pt 0.000 truept cc | | \parindent= 20 pt 20.000 truept sp | | \baselineskip= 12 pt 12.000 truept em | | ex | |Fractions 1 over 64 = 0.015625 decimal mu | +---------------------------------------------------------------------------+ You can change the typeface (design size is picked up from the name altho you could change that too, if you want), scale factor (\magstep), and the units you want everything expressed in. Then just stick in the dimension you are trying to calculate and the answer is worked out. The nice thing is it is memory resident, so you can pop it up and down during your edit session and it's small enough for PC-TeX to run with it loaded. I have sent the normalised (.SPS) file (plain text) and the .INS (binary) to the PUBLIC archive at KIRK.ASTON.AC.UK, and the LISTSERVs at Heidelberg (DHDURZ1.BITNET) and Texas A&M (TAMVM1.BITNET): if it's any use to anyone, maybe someone can walk it over to the InterNet. I guess I can send copies individually if people have problems attaching to the servers. InstaCalc itself can be downloaded from SIMTEL-20 (via TRICKLE@DKTC11.BITNET for European users). ...Peter Flynn | +++Editor - the file is [public.pc]texcalc.arc +++ --------------------------------- Date: 28-OCT-1988 19:16:25 GMT From: IAN@UK.AC.OX.BIOP To: info-tex@UK.AC.ASTON Subject: DVI to Brother HL-8 driver? Our lab has a Brother HL-8 laser printer which, among other modes, is supposed to be able to emulate an HP LaserJet+. Driven with Nelson Beebe's DVIJEP (from [PUBLIC.BEEBE_2_10.DVI] at Aston, compiled under VMS), the HL-8 exhibits chaotic behavior interspersed with snatches of reasonable TeX output. I suspect the problem's something to do with font downloading and/or switching, but as I don't have access to an HP manual I don't know in what respects if any the HL-8's emulation falls short of a genuine HP LaserJet+. It may be that a less sophisticated HP driver would work, I haven't had time to investigate this fully. Has anyone got any kind of DVI driver working for the HL-8? I can think of two good reasons to use Mr---(a) Mr Boothroyd's real name for his mailer may be set by his administration, not himself; (b) it is no longer the case that someone who gives a name without a handle can be assumed to be male; therefore the idea of Mr as the default handle is obsolete, and Mr should be treated in the same way as Mrs, Miss or Ms. If Mr Taylor wishes to be pernickety, I could ask why he insists on putting full stops after Mr and Dr, when both abbreviations end with the final letter of the word being abbreviated. Also, RFC822 is not the bible; the world is supposed to be moving towards X.400 standards. (Unfortunately, since the X.400 standards for the structure of mail envelopes appear to be very complicated, highly restrained, and designed around the U.S. personal naming system.) --------------------------------- Received: from [26.16.0.18] by NSS.Cs.Ucl.AC.UK via Satnet with SMTP id aa03432; 31 Oct 88 13:20 GMT Received: from sun.soe.clarkson.edu by omnigate.clarkson.edu id aa22685; 31 Oct 88 8:33 EST Received: by sun.soe.clarkson.edu (4.0/6.19) id AA17167; Mon, 31 Oct 88 08:34:39 EST Message-Id: <8810311334.AA17167@sun.soe.clarkson.edu> Date: Mon, 31 Oct 88 08:34:39 EST From: Michael DeCorte To: info-tex Subject: EMACS I have noticed that there is a bit of interest in emacs and emacs like editors. One that you are probably not familiar with is freemacs. Freemacs is written by Russ Nelson here at Clarkson (nelson@sun.soe.clarkson.edu). It's most interesting feature is that it is fully programmable. It also tries to be an exact duplicate of Gnu Emacs; to be more exact, any command that is has should behave exactly like Gnu Emacs. It only works on Z-100 or ibm PC's. If you would like freemacs, you can anonymous ftp to sun.soe.clarkson.edu or use the Clarkson archive-server. Send a note to archive-server@sun.soe.clarkson.edu with the body of the note containing path index freemacs You can also get it on floppy from Russ. Mail to him on how to do that. Seeing this seems to be the season for venting one's opinion I thought I would commment on the number of people and companies calling themselves `TeXperts'. I suggest they look at the answer to question 1.1 of the TeXbook: After you have mastered the material in this book, what will you be: A TeXpert or a TeXnician? Answer: A TeXnician (underpaid) sometimes called a TeXacker. Calling yourself a `TeXpert' proves that you aint. I need to know where to get TEX and Preview software, and the necessary printer drivers. One of our staff already uses TEX on an IBM PC, but I am looking for the VMS version. What I am hoping to do is drafts on a local matrix printer,(maybe an EPSON FX1000 which I would also have other use for,but I don't have anything at the moment) and final copy on a LASER, possibly the one the computer centre have purchased which they are planning to charge out at about 2 pence a sheet, this is an AGFA P400PS Postscript printer), we also have in the department an HPLASERJET II and EPSON GQ3500, but I feel the running costs for these make them unacceptable for draft, and the AGFA is a 7 minute walk away. The terminals we use are VISA LINK VT220's and CIFER T6 220's which are TEKTRONIX 4010 (maybe 4014) compatible. I will be very grateful for any information you can give me. For three lines you have to have \stackrel call itself. You also need to put in an explicit \scriptstyle in all lines except the bottom one if you want them all to be in the same size text. Example: \stackrel{\scriptstyle top}{\stackrel{\scriptsize middle}{bottom}} But I still cannot entirely solve Johm Simmie's chemistry problem, for two reasons: (i) \longrightarrow does not seem to expand enough (ii) I have not figured out how to coordinate \mbox and \scriptstyle to get ordinary text (rather than maths) in the top and bottom.
