At the meeting in Nottingham on Friday there was some discussion related to TeX/LaTeX and wysiwyg (eg wordperfect etc). I have available two sheets of A4 approximately half full of text, one using LaTeX and one using WordPerfect (same text, same font, same printer an Apple IINTX). If you would like copies for comparison purposes please send me a message with your postal address (each line starting in column 1). I can then `cut and paste' to print the envelope). Brother UK have a copy of the file we were printing, plus an example of the faulty output and admitted that the emulation was not correct. the problem lies in the use of "soft fonts", which DVIJEP uses exclusively. Brother sent some replacement ROMs for the printer, but these didn't work correctly either, so they are to send us some more. i think the problem will be fixed -- they're refreshingly keen to solve it and allow the printer to do real HP LaserJet+ emulation. dave osborne. Downloading a character in mid-page causes a page-throw (much as the real Laserjet Plus behaves on deleting a downloaded character). 2. The HL-8 gets unhappy about omitting the 0 parameter when specifying font 0. 3. I'm not sure whether its rounding of 1/4 dot units to whole dots is the same as the HP machine. Certainly revision was required to avoid ugly mis-spacings (e.g. implemen tation). In any case, the dvitype algorithms used in the driver assume that the printer is computing in whole pixel units. 4. It didn't cope with 256-character fonts (e.g. Silvio Levy's Greek fonts). I haven't got round to putting the whole thing into the right conditional compilation form for incorporation as a new member of the suite; but I've sent the whole lot off to Nelson Beebe in case he's interested in doing so. In the meantime, anyone who wants the HL-8 version is welcome to contact me. joe stoy --------------------------------- Received: from axion.bt.co.uk by kestrel.Ukc.AC.UK via PSS (UKC CAMEL FTP) id aa01643; 4 Nov 88 15:41 GMT Received: from boxwood by zaphod.axion.bt.co.uk via Ist SMTP channel id aa16587; 4 Nov 88 15:40 WET To: info-tex@uk.ac.aston cc: dbrennan@uk.co.bt.axion Subject: VorTeX availability Date: Fri, 04 Nov 88 15:40:11 GMT From: dbrennan@uk.co.bt.axion Message-ID: <8811041540.aa16587@zaphod.axion.bt.co.uk> Dear Peter, I'm a software engineer working at British Telecom Research Labs. There appears to be a bug in [PUBLIC.TREVORROW.VMS.PSPRINT]TEX.PS which causes PSPRINT to print portrait pages in landscape format and vice versa when used with a PS40/LN03R combination. The following section of TEX.PS should be changed from :- dev (PS40) eq % PrintServer? { land { [ 1 0 0 1 300 300 ] setmatrix % /landscape given } { [ 0 1 -1 0 3210 300 ] setmatrix % /landscape not given } ifelse } if to :- dev (PS40) eq % PrintServer? { land { [ 0 1 -1 0 3210 300 ] setmatrix % /landscape given } { [ 1 0 0 1 300 300 ] setmatrix % /landscape not given } ifelse } if ie. swap the parameters to setmatrix. I am not a PostScript wizard so can't give a proper explanation of what is happening but suffice it to say that our LN03R {\sl does} print raw PostScript, SIMPLEPLOT and Word Perfect files correctly. Also an Apple laserwriter produces correctly oriented output. I therefore suspect it is TEX.PS which caused the problem rather than anything else. Philip Riebold thinks the setmatrix parameters need to be swapped in the following code in TEX.PS: dev (PS40) eq % PrintServer? { land { [ 1 0 0 1 300 300 ] setmatrix % /landscape given } { [ 0 1 -1 0 3210 300 ] setmatrix % /landscape not given } ifelse } if He had me worried for a second or two, but it became clear that he is using an LN03R, and not a PrintServer 40. The use of setmatrix is highly device-specific. It is used (reluctantly) because the equivalent device-independent operators (rotate/scale/translate) can cause occasional alignment problems in math extension characters. For example, try PSPRINTing page 18 of NASTY.DVI with and without /landscape after replacing [ 1 0 0 1 300 300 ] setmatrix with 90 rotate 72 300 div dup neg scale 300 dup translate and [ 0 1 -1 0 3210 300 ] setmatrix with 72 300 div dup neg scale 300 dup neg 10.7 mul translate (The purpose of the setmatrix and equivalent rotate/scale/translate calls is to create a coordinate system suitable for a DVI file; ie. an origin 1 inch in from the top left corner of the paper and units in device pixels.) TEX.PS currently supports 3 device types: the Apple LaserWriter series, the Linotronic 300 and the PrintServer 40. It does NOT know about the LN03R. People wanting to set up an interface to such a printer should read the section "Adding a New Device" in the PSPRINT System Guide. (From what Philip says, it seems that a quick and dirty solution is to use /DEVICE=PS40 for an LN03R and swap the PS40 setmatrix parameters in TEX.PS.)
