I use the word "or-parallelism" quite often, and in some places the line breaks badly. I don't want to use \- in every occurence of thw word, so I attempted to add "parallelism" to the hyphenation exception dictionary: \hyphenation{par-al-lel-ism} Unfortunately, it seems that TeX is unable to deduce that "parallelism" in "or-parallelism" can be hyphenated using the above exception. I then tried to add or-parallelism to the list: \hyphenation{par-al-lel-ism or-par-al-lel-ism} this didn't work, I guess TeX thinks I am referring to the word "orparallelism". So my question is: how can I add a word that contains hyphens into the exception dictionary? Thanks in advance for any help! Please send replies to my e-mail address, as I don't read this group frequently. TeX certainly does suppress hyphenation of words containing explicit hyphenation (in my view, for quite sound reasons). the only `easy' way i can see is something like \def\op{or-par\-all\-el\-ism} or however you want parallelism hyphenated, although i might be inclined to fiddle with the \hyphenpenalty and \exhyphenpenalty values (if only they were not paragraph local, rather than word local....). i'm sure that dek has something to say about this, but a cursory glance at the book doesn't reveal anything. malcolm ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 07 Aug 91 11:01:31 +0100 From: schoepf%de.zib-berlin.sc@uk.ac.nsfnet-relay Subject: Re: problem with hyphenation Kish.Shen@computer-lab.cambridge.ac.uk writes: I have a problem with TeX's hyphenation, and I wonder if anyone knows the solution: TeX is unable to hyphenate the word "parallelism". Virtual fonts are necessary for correct hyphenation of languages with accents as planned by D. Knuth for TeX 3.0. Neither OzTeX nor Textures, the two TeXs on the Macintosh, have any plans to support virtual fonts with their printer drivers in the near future. (Check for yourself with the authors A. Trevorrow and Brian Smith .) However they support TeX 3 at the composition level. That means one can get a valid .dvi file, provided one uses font metric (.tfm) files coherent with the the new virtual versions of the computer modern fonts. There are two versions both recently released. --- the "em" fonts of Arbor Text, contact help@arbortext.com. They seem to include virtual versions of Adobe Times etc. --- the "dc" fonts of Bochum posted for anonymous ftp transfer at ymir.claremont.edu (134.173.4.23) Both of these use the 1990 Cork standard for the full eight bit range 0-255 (see Ferguson's article TUGboat Nov(?) 1990). What is still missing on the Macintosh is a "dvi ==> postscript" converter (printer driver) that handles virtual fonts. The obvious candidate is DVIPS of Tom Rokicki. HAS DVIPS BEEN, OR IS IT BEING COMPILED FOR THE MACINTOSH?? This compilation would be an important step. It would, for the first time on the Macintosh computers, make it possible to use TeX with correct hyphenation of European languages. Laurent Siebenmann PS. I expect that modulo some tricks, it would then be possible to use the built-in Textures and OzTeX previews for proof versions providing one is willing to recompile for the final dvips printing. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Aug 91 11:36:02 +0200 From: akgul%earn.trbilun@uk.ac.earn-relay Subject: TeX on DG MV20000 TeX on DG MV20000 AOS/VS I have TeX 3.1 running on the above machine, together with Tangle 4.2, Weave 4.1 and BibTeX 0.99c. I mailed UkTeX recently (91-27) with a problem with the TFM files for AMSTeX, and Brian HK explained that binary files in the Aston archive were stored in variable length, max510byte files, but that TeX on VMS expects fixed length 512 byte files. he also said that there could be a utility to convert these files somewhere in the archive. Well I converted the .tfms via kermit (which worked a treat but was a bit sloooow). I then realised that all the .pk files for AMStex would probably also be incorrect - sure enough they were. (Although dvips used them fine, dvln03 and dvivdu both complained) So I looked in the archive and found a utility called ZAPFILE, which seemed to be what I was looking for. So I did what I thought would do the conversion: zapfile *.*pk/type=fixed/record_size=512/maximum_record_size=512 BUT.... I now get 'BAD pk file - pre command missing' for every one of the fonts. Even dvips fails to read them now. Looking at a dump of some of the files, each seems to just have got two extra bytes in each record to 'make it up' to the 512 instead of 510, but I am not too sure what is going on. So, can anyone help. Have I ruined the .pk files completely using zapfile? How do I successfully convert binary files from the archive into a format that VMS will accept (without transferring them twice through kermit - which is OK for a few but not really any good for all the .pk files which come with AMStex.) Is zapfile the utility I want? Or is there something else? thanks, Ian Ellery (ps - when a file containing the word 'Aston' goes through my spell checker it suggests I change it to 'Satan' - is it trying to tell me something?) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Aug 91 12:32:44 +0000 From: fwl@uk.ac.aberystwyth.compsci Subject: multiple indexes using LaTeX book.sty I am using the LaTeX book style but want more than one index, i.e., I want a general index, a name index, etc. Does anyone have, or know of, a style that allows this? DVIDRV.ENG is annotated as version 1.3i 26/2/1990 but my copy is annotated as version 1.4d 25/9/1990. (I obtained my copy from the Aston archive earlier this year.) HELPE.TXT is dated 22nd June 1990 but HELP.ENG is dated 25/9/1990. These two files seem to be different editions of the same thing. The simple answer is that the UK TeX Archive at Aston University has had its own dedicated machine since December of 1990, and you should address TeXserver@uk.ac.tex; the uk.ac.aston.tex entry was removed from the NRS in January 1991.
