I hope you will be able to help...
I have transferred the above file from your archive onto our VAX. The
KERMIT'ed it onto a PC and used PKUNZIP, which fails with a reference
to PKFIXZIP. Running this program "fixes" the problem generating another
file which PKUNZIP doesn't object to but creates files which hangs the
PC when they are executed.
Can you suggest anything that I might be doing wrong?

yes. dont use that file! its an old version of GhostScript, and you
should have the most recent. in general, I dont think the UK TeX
Archive should carry GhostScript, as its widely archived in gnu places
(such as in packages/gnu on src.doc.ic.ac.uk in the UK), but I have
added the most recent executables in [.g-script.dos] as
dos4gw.exe_boo
gs.exe_boo
gs386.exe_boo
which are BOO-encoded executables

PKZIPFIX rarely fixes anything :-(
A new copy of GS-241.ZIP has been queue for transfer to Uk.Ac.TeX:

Subject: author (date)
In UKTeX vol 92 #21, Mike Piff asked about .sty/.bst files to gives things
like
author (date)
It looks as though a few minutes after sending his query off to UKTeX, Mike
found an answer by browsing through the Aston archive (where he found some
stuff I hacked together a while back) and then moving brackets so that
(author, date)
became
author (date).
Sebastian suggested the "Harvard" stuff, which as far as I remember has a
\citeasnoun command that delivers things like
author (date)
Although I think author-date should be "supported", and hence that there
should be commands that deliver
(author, date)
and
(date)
I'm not actually convinced that it is desirable to have a command (e.g.,
\citeasnoun) to deliver
author (date)
The
(date)
form is used when the author's name occurs naturally in a sentence
[see ISO 690 and BS 1629]. Therefore, in
author (date)
"author" is not part of the citation, it's part of the sentence in
which the citation is embedded.
In most situations the distinction between
(author, date)
where author is part of the citation, and
author (date)
where author is part of the sentence and (date) is the citation does not
matter (although, in terms of LaTeX3, which Mike mentioned, a decision
would have to be taken about whether to provide a \citeasnoun-like
command). But automatic conversion from the style of a journal that wants
author-date to the style of a journal that wants reference-by-number may be
achieve a higher degree of success (i.e., less human re-writing afterwards)
if "citation" commands don't deliver "a part of the sentence". E.g., to
use an ISO 690 example,
... explored in the sciences (Crane, 1972). ... noted by Stieg (1981, p.556)
converts to
... explored in the sciences [24]. ... noted by Stieg [13, p.556].
not to
... explored in the sciences [24]. ... noted by [13, p.556].
[I think human intervention is probably inevitable in the reverse
direction, because some numbers will have to go to (author, date) and some
to just (date). Otherwise you'd get ... Stieg (Stieg 1981, p.556).]
I think its worth having commands that deliver
(author, date)
and
(date)
but not \citeasnoun-like commands that give
author (date)

OK, so this is probably a FAQ, but here goes:
Is there a document anywhere with brief descriptions of the files
in the UK TeX archive ? I can get the file list OK, but that
doesn't tell me what the various files do.
I copied the file [tex-archive.doc]uktex.tex to my own account,
but I can't get it to go through TeX - it seems some files are missing
archive and texline, for example. It would be really handy to have that
kind of information on-line. Any ideas ?

No. The TeX archive is composed of a core, written entirely by Don Knuth
and documented in ``Computers and Typesetting'', together with
an enormous plethora of adjuncts written by all and sundry. The
archive contains both of these, and simply maintaining it in its
present state takes the combined efforts of a large number of volunteers;
documenting it would be a mammoth and never-ending task, before which
painting the Forth bridge would pale into insignificance.

basically, no. the archive group has discussed this many times over
the last few years, and we have never found a solution which didnt
involve a very great deal of time that nobody has. we rely on
- the readme files in multi-file packages
- the summaries often posted to UKTeX when a package is added
- the names of the files (!)
- the facility available to most users of logging in and actually
looking at the files (this usually suffices for LaTeX style files,
for instance)
yes, an on-line guide would be wonderful. D M Jones is compiling an annotated
directory of style files, which we will certainly mount when it is
complete

Subject: Thesis Submission
Dear all,
I am a final year PhD. student in the Elec. Eng Dept. at the University of Hull
and I am about to start my write-up!! However, I am disturbed by the University
regulations on double spacing etc. considering that TeX is supposed to produce
book quality (?!?) output. I also remember that a few months ago there were a
set of queries on University Thesis regulations and a British Standard!
Being fairly unorganised I have lost the BS number and I would like someone to
post it to me along with any relevant stylesheets they have produced (LaTeX
format please!).
I have been advised to write to the Board of Examiners and try to change to a
more tree-friendly output so the more ammunition the better!
Thanks in advance

Subject: emtex dvihplj driver and font-scaling
I was trying to use the font-scaling feature of DVIHPLJ with my DeskJet500.
I chose the options: resolution 300, font resolution 600, font scaling 2
( /r300 /rf600 /fs2, I think) and the deskjet option, of course. What I
got was a rather fuzzy mess. I don't think I was doing anything stupid
because the same options for resolution and font scaling gave me what I
expected when I tried it with dviscr and dvimsp. I was able to reproduce
the unexpected fuzzy effect by using dvihplj to write to a file, then
converting to a .PCX file using the utility provided with emTeX, and then
viewing using windows paintbrush. The version of dvihplj I have is 1.4d.
Any help would be appreciated, Richard Kaye

Subject: Crossreferencing in BibTeX
A BiBTeX question. I'd like somewhat more sophisticated
crossreferencing that BiBTeX seems (I say seems as I
don't understand the crossrefonly field, and I can't find
any documentation that tells me what it does) to provide.
Basically, if I have a document with one reference
\cite{AD90} with
@inproceedings{AD90, author = "R.~Alur and D.~Dill",
crossref = {ICALP17}, pages = "322--335",
title = "Automata for modeling real-time systems"}
@Proceedings{ICALP17, title = "the Proceedings of the $17^{th}$ ICALP",
booktitle = "the Proceedings of $17^{th}$ ICALP",
editor = "M.~Paterson", volume = 443,
year = 1990, publisher = lncs, key = {ICALP 90}}
then I'd like to see in my Bibliography
[AD90] R.~Alur and D.~Dill, Automata for modeling real-time systems,
in the Proceedings of $17^{th}$ ICALP, (M.~Paterson, Ed.),
Springer Verlag LNCS 443, 1990.
However, if I have both \cite{AD90} and \cite{LX90} where
@inproceedings{LX90, author = "K.~Larsen and L.~Xinxin",
crossref = {ICALP17}, pages = "322--335",
title = "Automata for modeling real-time,
title = "Compositionality Through an Operational Semantics of Contexts"
}
then I'd like
[AD90] R.~Alur and D.~Dill, Automata for modeling real-time systems,
in [Pat90].
[LX90] K.~Larsen and L.~Xinxin, Compositionality Through an Operational
Semantics of Contexts, in [Pat90].
[Pat90] M.~Paterson (ed.), The Proceedings of $17^{th}$ ICALP,
Springer Verlag LNCS 443, 1990.
Any help much appreciated.

Subject: MS-DOS compiled versions of ZIP/UNZIP on FILESERV/Niord
I've had a few private posts from people on MS-DOS machines which, for
various reasons, cannot create the UNZIP and ZIP utilities I announced last
week (most of them have created it on their larger system and want it for
the PC now that they're hooked on its performance and platform
independence).
I have created yet another package for your access, which contains the
pre-compiled MS-DOS executables for your use. Attached is the description
file.

ZIP_PC_COMPILED
---------------
The ZIP_PC_COMPILED package includes UUENCODEd files which include the
MS-DOS executables and documentation for Info-Zip's ZIP (v. 1.0) and UNZIP
(v. 4.2) utilities. This set is built entirely from the source files
distributed in the ZIP and UNZIP packages and is completely compatible with
the wide variety of platforms under which those utilities can be compiled.
This implementation is largely compatible with the widely-used PK*ZIP suite
of utilities, although there are some differences.
The UNZIP variant of this distribution UUDECODEs to UNZIP42.EXE, a
self-exploding executable which creates the UNZIP executable under MS-DOS,
as well as the accompanying documentation. The ZIP variant of this
distribution UUDECODEs to a ZIP archive file, which may be unzipped with
UNZIP or with most versions of PKUNZIP. The ZIP archive file includes the
MS-DOS executable and documentation for ZIP.
To retrieve the package of two files distributed in three parts, include:
SENDME ZIP_PC_COMPILED
in the body of a mail message to FILESERV@SHSU.BITNET (FILESERV@SHSU.edu).
To retrieve a specific file, such as ZIP_PC_COMPILED.UNZIP42_UUE, include:
SENDME ZIP_PC_COMPILED.UNZIP42_UUE
in your mail message to FILESERV. For anonymous ftp retrieval of these
files, they are available in their original form from Niord.SHSU.edu
(192.92.115.8) in the directory [.ZIP_PC_COMPILED].
Files in this package: (1 Block = 512 bytes)
File Blocks Save file as:

ZIP_PC_COMPILED.UNZIP42_UUE 72 UNZIP42.UUE
ZIP_PC_COMPILED.ZIP10EXX_UUE_1OF2 79 ZIP10EXX.UUE
ZIP_PC_COMPILED.ZIP10EXX_UUE_2OF2 49 (concatenate to part 1, then decode)
Approximate total blocks in full ZIP_PC_COMPILED package = 200

Subject: SPAN access to FILESERV/Niord
As usual, I overlook the simple and obvious. Michael Lemke
, who was assisting me on an entirely unrelated
topic, pointed out that the archives available on FILESERV and Niord can
also be accessed via SPAN since THENET (the Texas Higher Education Network)
is SPAN-connected via UTSPAN::UTADNX. Users on SPAN can access SHSU's root
archive area in
UTSPAN::UTADNX::SHSU::MX_ROOT:[FILESERV]
You can then set default to any of the directories built off of the
[FILESERV] root, backup, copy, or view the file(s) or directories you wish.
Thought I'd pass this along. My thanks to Michael for pointing out this
interface tool which we can painlessly make available.
Regards, George

\begin{abstract}
This note describes an implementation
of \TeX\ on the Macintosh,
following the standard "web2c" conversion,
using Symantec's \ThinkC\ compiler.
It was simpler than the author
(who is no guru) expected
to port `UnixTeX' to the Mac.
The whole exercise is based on standard sources,
the minimal changes necessary
being given as "patch" files.

Subject: updates of utilities for TeX and PostScript fonts
I have updated or added various packages in the UK TeX Archive which
help deal with the relationship between TeX and PostScript fonts:
a) patchlevel 14 of xdvi. the interesting addition to this is that if
it fails to find a font, it will call MakeTeXPK in just the same
way as dvips.
[tex-archive.src.unix-archives]xdvi.tarz_uue
[tex-archive.drivers.xdvi]
b) ps2pk 1.2. The full set of sources, and executables for MSDOS 386
machines. This package generates TeX .pk files from Adobe Type 1
fonts.
[tex-archive.src.unix-archives]psp2k12.tarz_uue
[tex-archive.utils.ps2pk]
c) (new) pfb2mf. Programs to convert Type1 fonts to Metafont, by
Erik-Jan Vens. This is more sophisticated that Warren Toomey's
package posted last week, and means you now have at least 4 ways of
getting TeX bitmap fonts from Adobe Type1 originals (the 4th is the
GNU font utilities)
[tex-archive.src.unix-archives]pfb2mf.tarz_uue
[tex-archive.utils.pfb2mf]
d) Lee Hetherington's utilies to convert/assemble/disassemble Type1
fonts in various ways
[tex-archive.src.unix-archives]t1utils-1-1.tarz_uue
[tex-archive.utils.t1utils]
All the packages have the appropriate README file for more detail
